Project: Protection of water resources for future generations, implementation period March 2005 to September 2006

Aim of the project
Public information and education about the need to protect water resources.

Target group
Two target groups have been selected for the public information and education: a) pupils from eight territorially isolated Lithuanian schools (located in remote areas) and b)water experts. The common activity of these two target groups should assure the continuity of the project results.

Project implementation summary
A number of seminars for the school children from schools participating in the project and seminars for Water club members have been carried out during the reporting period. Within 18 month 6 seminars for Water club members have been organized, 16 seminars conducted in project schools, 8 voluntary monitoring actions and 4 water bodies cleaning events have been organized, three contests – essay, painting and photo contests carried out in project schools. Furthermore, two TV shows were organized, 14 articles in weekly Dialogas and regional press published during the reporting period.

Target group pupils. During one year and a half sixteen seminars – two seminars in each school (introductory and final) were conducted in project schools. During the seminars presentations and lectures about water importance and need to protect water were made, two educational movies were demonstrated: “Water for future” and “Treasure of Earth depth”. DVD and video copies of the educational film were delivered to all project schools, and teachers will be able to freely use to film in the schools for training process. In total 1300 school children and teachers participated in the seminars organized in project schools. Colorful educational brochures describing natural water cycle, water use and pollution were published during the project. About 1200 copies of this brochure were distributed in schools. Essay, painting and photo contests were organized in all of the project schools, pupils participated in the voluntary monitoring activities, school kids of four schools participated in water bodies cleaning events in spring 2006.

For the competition project participants presented 33 drawings, 19 photographs and 14 essays reflecting pupils’ understanding about water, its meaning and importance, as well as their attitude. Commission, comprising of two environmentalists, two teachers and two pupils evaluated all drawings, essays and photographs. The best pieces were selected in each school, which later competed in between, and the final winners of each competition have been selected afterwards.

On 19 April 2006 fifty six school kids and their teachers were invited to a seminar to Vilnius, which took place in the hotel „Naujasis Vilnius“. During the seminar once again it was reminded how important is to protect and save the water. The winners of all competitions have been awarded, and the event ended with a cultural programme.

During the seminars organised in schools in spring 2006, the best drawings and photographs were demonstrated.

Target group Water experts
Six seminars were organised during the 18 month of the project, where approximately 200 water specialists and project participants participated. Important water related issues have been discussed during the seminars (Public participation in water resource management, Sustainable or fragmented water resource management in Lithuania, The role of water specialists on the formation of public attitude towards water, Water supply and waste water treatment during 2007- 2013; Waste water treatment in small settlements, etc).
